Timothy, a disciple of Paul

Timothy, a disciple of Paul, provides some wonderful examples of Christian life. He was apparently a good student, a faithful student and a student who applied his teachings in real life. What an example for us.

Timothy's father was a heathen Greek. (Acts 16:1,3). His mother was a Jewess, called Eunice, and his grandmother was Lois. Paul mentions them by name in 2 Timothy 1:5.

Paul speaks of the unfeigned faith which was in Timothy, and which dwelt at the first in Eunice and Lois. It is evident that Eunice was converted to Christ on Paul's 1st missionary journey to Derbe and Lystra, because, when he next visited these cities, she is spoken of as "a Jewess who believed" (Acts 16:1). We enjoy the epistles to Timothy because they provide such complete, yet easy to understand instructions for behavior of the body of Christ.

Studying the biography and letters to Timothy can be beneficial to all of us. Paul’s letters describe the qualifications for church leadership which is helpful to those seeking leadership positions, those charged with appointing or selecting leaders and for the rest of the church body to understand the enormous responsibilities of those in these positions and the support they need from us.(1 Timothy 3:1-13),

The epistles to Timothy also provide encouragement to us to teach our children and grandchildren in The Way.
2 Timothy 1
5I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia writes a very nice, concise biography of Timothy, a disciple and beloved student of the Apostle Paul. http://www.searchgodsword.org/enc/isb/view.cgi?number=T8794.

The writings of Paul to Timothy shows the mutually beneficial relationship possible between a teacher and student when each is able to encourage, support and love the other. How wonderful it must be to be a part of such a relationship.

Since each of us, as we follow the edits of The Great Commission, has the potential to find ourselves in both roles at the same time it is good to have such a practical example of leadership and followship.

I encourage you to re-read the Epistles to Timothy for enlightenment and encouragement. I thank God for wonderful teachers and mentors. I pray God for guidance in every opportunity provided to me to spread the gospel.

May God Forever Be a Blessing In Your Life!!!
