Trying to Hear

Mark 8:21 New King James Version (NKJV)

21 So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”

Sometimes we just “don't get it”. Sometimes we just plain forget the many times He has manifested Himself in our lives. Here comes a time of trouble and, once again, we are struggling as if we need to solve our problems all by ourselves.

These men walked with God, Himself. They saw first hand the miracles He performed. They were taught from the lips of God. Yet, they worried about their next meal.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 New International Version (NIV)

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,  rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,  17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Sometimes we may wonder why God bothered to give us so many reminders of the many times his people, in both the old and new testaments, just seemed to forget.



Yet, throughout the scriptures, we are reminded of His eternal love and His great patience with them. This is our hope and promise, that He loves us and is patient with us as we struggle to grow and understand.
We return to the scriptures over and over so that we may be taught, chastised when needed, and corrected so that we can get on with the business of doing Our Father's work and spend less time fretting over nothing. “Give us this day, our daily bread”, and I chose to trust that You will.

A God of Covenant Promises

((Covenant - the conditional promises made to humanity by God, as revealed in Scripture.) Micah was the prophet to whom God revealed the city of the coming Messiah; (Micah 5: 2-4) but the writings of Micah hold many more lessons for us today. Micah had the painful job of prophesying at a time when, not only kings and rulers, but the prophets and priests themselves were leading the people astray.
Micah 3:5-6 New International Version (NIV) 5 This is what the Lord says: “As for the prophets who lead my people astray, they proclaim ‘peace’ if they have something to eat, but prepare to wage war against anyone who refuses to feed them. 6 Therefore night will come over you, without visions, and darkness, without divination. The sun will set for the prophets, and the day will go dark for them.
We are God's chosen people and we do have His Covenant Promises. But we quickly forget that all Covenants begin with a commitment to follow as God leads. Abraham was promised to be the father of many nations and a blessing to many but he had to be willing to leave his country, his people and his father's household to go to a strange land. (Genesis 12) The chosen who were led from Egypt by Moses were promised “a land flowing with milk and honey”, but they had to commit to following only the One True God. (Exodus 3:8) We are promised life eternal but we must believe and be baptized. (Mark 16:16) God has promised that all things work together for good to those who love and serve Him faithfully (Romans 8:28). We have an obligation to study so that we are not easily led astray.
Micah 2:11 New International Version (NIV) 11 If a liar and deceiver comes and says, ‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’ that would be just the prophet for this people!
We study to know that we have a loving and forgiving Father who delights in the joy of His children. We study so that we are not easily led astray by the prophets and leaders of today who seek only to “tickle our ears”. (2 Timothy 4:3-4) or put forth their own agenda. We study to be ready and worthy of the Covenant Promises of Jehovah Jireh, our Lord Who Provides.
Micah 7:18-20 New International Version (NIV) 18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. 20 You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.
We study to have a true appreciation of the coming of our Lord and Savior; His miraculous birth and life; His sacrifice on the cross and His gift of salvation. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

Joy of Praise and Thanksgiving

Our Senior Teacher spoke on the joys of a grateful heart during our Thanksgiving Celebration. Her scripture focus was:
Luke 17:12-17 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance  13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?
When we were accepted into the family of God we became spiritual brothers and sisters of Christ Himself; but how many of us behave like spoiled children who are ever demanding and seldom taking time to give a sincere “thank You”? Our Heavenly Father, Yahweh Jireh, Our God Who Provides, gave us in His Son a perfect example to follow.
Matthew 14:19-20 New International Version (NIV) 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.  20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Matthew 15:36 New International Version (NIV) 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.
Mark 14:22-23 New International Version (NIV) 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
Two of the greatest of the many gifts given to us by the father are His Word and the Holy Spirit, the comforter. We need look no further for examples and help in offering to God our gifts of praise and thanksgiving. The Psalms provide exceptional examples of the joys of praise and thanksgiving and today's scripture is one wonderful illustration! May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

Philippians 4:4-8; Looking before the THEN

Philippians 4:4-8 Contemporary English Version (CEV) 4 Always be glad because of the Lord! I will say it again: Be glad. 5 Always be gentle with others. The Lord will soon be here. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel. 8 Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise.
I found a wonderful posting from Biblical Foundations For Freedom which I wish to share because it so touched my heart. I don't think there can be too many ways possible for believers to stumble onto these words. The posting included a picture of steps leading to the promise of God's peace and encouragement to read Philippians 4:1-7 which leads to the promise.
Looking before the THEN So many of the promises of God start with words like THEN or THEREFORE. This implies that there are some steps before the promise. It is always a good practice, when studying the Word, to look a few verses or sometimes a few chapters ahead to make sure we are studying in context. This is especially true when our study includes words like THEN! Today's study includes an awesome promise....A promise of peace beyond understanding! We must not neglect to study what comes before this THEN!
Step 1: Living in Harmony 2 Euodia and Syntyche, you belong to the Lord, so I beg you to stop arguing with each other. Step 2: Helping Co-workers 3 And, my true partner, I ask you to help them. These women have worked together with me and with Clement and with the others in spreading the good news. Their names are now written in the book of life. Step 3: Rejoicing in The Lord Always 4 Always be glad because of the Lord! I will say it again: Be glad. Step 4: Living Graciously 5 Always be gentle with others. The Lord will soon be here. Step 5: Praying Out Our Anxieties 6 Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. THEN 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.

"Where is the Anchor?”

Acts 27:14-24 New King James Version (NKJV) 14 But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon. 15 So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive.  16 And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty. 17 When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.  18 And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.  19 On the third day we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands.  20 Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up. 21 But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.  22 And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.  23 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,  24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’
Euroclydon [jʊˈrɒklɪˌdɒn] (Free Online Dictionary) n 1. (Christian Religious Writings / Bible) a stormy wind from the north or northeast that occurs in the Levant, which caused the ship in which St Paul was traveling to be wrecked (Acts 27:14) 2. (Earth Sciences / Physical Geography) any stormy wind Before we set out on any phase of this journey called life we need to know where our anchor lies. No captain would dare start out on a trip without checking the entire ship for safety. All of the sails need to be repaired; caulking must be done; ships store must be secured and that all important anchor must be in place. How many times do we set out on a life journey without consulting our anchor, God himself! Paul knew that this was a dangerous trip. This trip was taken after the Great Day of Forgiveness, a time when all seafaring folks knew the seas were dangerous. Paul had traveled enough to know that this was not a good time to be on the sea. Perhaps the captain needed the income from just one more trip to meet his needs for the year. Perhaps he just wanted to spend the winter in a more promising place. Whatever his motive, he didn't honor Paul's suggestion and perhaps his own better judgment. What do we do when we are not in control of a situation yet know that the best course is not being followed? During the worst of the storm Paul received counsel from an Angel of the Lord. Jesus left us a Comforter, a guide, a shelter in times of storm in the person of the Holy Spirit. Do we avail ourselves of this critical anchor on all of our journeys of life? Dear Jesus, I ask that you give us the wisdom to search your Word and our hearts and to always seek the counsel of the Holy Spirit at every juncture of this journey called life. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

Not Ready, but Prepared

Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.  (Job 14:5) 
Our church Moderator often reminds us of the need to be prepared for the coming of our Lord. She admits that she is not in a hurry to die, but that she remains prepared every day. As seniors we have a responsibility to help the next generations understand that aging and death is as much a part of life as birth. There is no need to be creepy about this, it just is so. But the most important part of this life transition is helping our children and grandchildren to understand what is necessary to be prepared. Talk about your walk with God. Help them understand that the road to salvation is not rocket science and just requires an humble acceptance of a gift freely given. Share scriptures about salvation when appropriate. Answer questions about your belief. Say “I don't know” when you don't, but try to find answers in the Word.
I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.  (1 Corinthians 15:50
It is my prayer that each of us, although perhaps not ready, are prepared.

Christian Leadership

Acts 6: 1-7 Contemporary English Version (CEV) Seven Leaders for the Church 6 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day. 2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God’s message in order to serve at tables. 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God’s Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things. 4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.” 5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish people in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show that they had been chosen to do this work. 7 God’s message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.
The Apostles had the example of Moses about effective leadership (Exodus 18:15-23) and were more than willing to give up the day to day running of things and put these chores in the hands of capable men of God. So many dynamics were in place in the choosing of these men and trust was in the forefront. The Apostles had to trust that the men charged with choosing the new leaders would use sound judgment in their choices. They had to trust that the men chosen would be willing to do the work and withstand any criticism that was bound to come their way with such a delicate task. The men charged with this task had to trust that they would be supported by the Apostles and the people. They had to put aside any preferences or biases they had and trust the Holy Spirit to guide them at all times. They were helped in this when the Apostles prayed and placed their hands on them as a sign of blessing on them and their work. This decision was a win-win for everyone. The Apostles were freed to teach, the widows received fair treatment and a positive example was set which encouraged growth in the church! (even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord!!!) We are told very little about these men and there is little in scripture about them after this event, with the exception of Stephen; but the response of the current followers and the fact that many felt safe to become new followers tells a lot about their leadership. This is another example of the importance of not only building the kingdom, but maintaining the kingdom. God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

A Servant's Prayer Answered

Genesis 24:10-21 Contemporary English Version (CEV) 10 Soon after that, the servant loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with valuable gifts. Then he set out for the city in northern Syria, where Abraham’s brother Nahor lived. 11 When he got there, he let the camels rest near the well outside the city. It was late afternoon, the time when the women came out for water. ' 12 The servant prayed:You, Lord, are the God my master Abraham worships. Please keep your promise to him and let me find a wife for Isaac today.  13 The young women of the city will soon come to this well for water,  14 and I’ll ask one of them for a drink. If she gives me a drink and then offers to get some water for my camels, I’ll know she is the one you have chosen and that you have kept your promise to my master. 15-16 While he was still praying, a beautiful unmarried young woman came by with a water jar on her shoulder. She was Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Abraham’s brother Nahor and his wife Milcah. Rebekah walked past Abraham’s servant, then went over to the well, and filled her water jar. When she started back,  17 Abraham’s servant ran to her and said, “Please let me have a drink of water.” 18 “I’ll be glad to,” she answered. Then she quickly took the jar from her shoulder and held it while he drank.  19-20 After he had finished, she said, “Now I’ll give your camels all the water they want.” She quickly poured out water for them, and she kept going back for more, until his camels had drunk all they wanted.  21 Abraham’s servant did not say a word, but he watched everything Rebekah did, because he wanted to know for certain if this was the woman the Lord had chosen.
Today's scripture is a lesson about trust, faith and wondrous expectation.
Psalm 105:4 The Message (MSG) 105 1-6 Hallelujah! Thank God! Pray to him by name!     Tell everyone you meet what he has done! Sing him songs, belt out hymns,     translate his wonders into music! Honor his holy name with Hallelujahs,     you who seek God. Live a happy life! Keep your eyes open for God, watch for his works;     be alert for signs of his presence. Remember the world of wonders he has made,     his miracles, and the verdicts he’s rendered—         O seed of Abraham, his servant,         O child of Jacob, his chosen.
Our scripture begins “soon after that” It helps us to understand the importance of these verses when we study the nature of the man, Abraham, his special relationship with God and his relationship with this special servant. There was a lot of trust in today's scriptures. We should know that this was a trusted servant, a servant who knew about Abraham's God. This servant was witness to his master's devotion to God. This servant was trusted with all that Abraham had including the son through whom we all would be blessed. There is a lot of faith in today's scripture. Abraham had faith that God would provide a suitable wife for Isaac . He had faith that his servant would follow his instructions. The servant had faith that his prayers for guidance would be answered. There was wondrous expectation in today's scripture. When he had done as he was instructed, the servant waited patiently for God to manifest himself. As he waits at the well for the wife of Isaac to be revealed, he kept his eyes open for the Lord. He watched for His work; and he was alert for signs of His presence. Today we can rest in the assurance that God is ever present in our lives and that He answers prayers. With this confidence we can keep our eyes open for the Lord, watch for His work and be patiently alert for signs of His presence. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

This same Peter...

Luke 5:1-11 King James Version (KJV) 5 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
This same Peter...
Luke 5:8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
Peter was a man with flashes of brilliant insight mixed with periods when he “just didn't get it”, yet, through it all he was and continues to be used by Jesus in mighty ways to spread the gospel. Peter's words told many stories. Peter's words acknowledged at his first meeting his recognition that there was something special about this man, Jesus. His words also conveyed his understanding of his own sinful nature. This same Peter, when asked in Matthew 16:15-16 “But whom say ye that I am?” was led by divine knowledge to respond, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Yet, it is this same Peter whom Jesus rebukes when he is not able to grasp the divine mission of sacrifice which Jesus willingly faced. (Matthew 16:23 (KJV) 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Peter walked on water with Our Lord, though, in a moment of doubt he began to sink. Yet this same Peter was volatile: John 18:10 (KJV) 10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Peter was afraid. He denied the Lord not once but three times out of fear for his own life (Matthew 26:31-36, 69-74 ; Mark 14:27-31, 66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:1-11). Yet, this same Peter, on the day of Pentecost, the fiftieth day, spoke with strength and conviction of the promises of the prophets which Jesus had fulfilled and opened the eyes and hearts of more than 3,000 (Acts 2). Peter is mentioned 154 times in the KJV of the bible. His life is inspiration to us because of the nature of his devotion as a servant of Jesus Christ. His life a beacon of hope to us because of our recognition that even this same Peter had his failings and had to depend on the same grace and mercy which enriches our lives. Transfiguration

Matthew 17 New King James Version (NKJV) Jesus Transfigured on the Mount 17 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus
In three short years Jesus prepared a small group of men to head up the awesome task of bringing the gospel, the good news, to a dying people. He clearly understood the trials they would be facing when he was no longer physically with them and gave them glimpses of His true nature to sustain them in the days to come. “ Now after six days”.... This is six days following the time when the Pharisees and Sadducees had demanded a sign from heaven to prove the truth of Jesus' teachings, a sign he chose not to waste on those whose eyes were closed to the truth. This was after Peter had been led by the Holy Spirit to recognize Jesus as “the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” This was after Jesus spoke to them clearly about his coming suffering and death and of his coming resurrection.
(Matt 16: 21 From then on, Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “I must go to Jerusalem. There the nation’s leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make me suffer terribly. I will be killed, but three days later I will rise to life.”).
We have glimpses of His true nature, the son of the Living God, to sustain us through every trial we face today. We can hold fast to the knowledge that he left the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, to be with us through every good or bad time. It's up to us to acknowledge his presence and to experience the peace he brings. My prayer is that we will all be “transfigured” by the Holy Spirit into vessels which shine as lights in our present world. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

Joy of Praise

Psalm 13 (NIV) For the director of music. A psalm of David. 1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? 3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, 4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him, ” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.
Sepher Tehillim, "The Book of Praises" Opportunities to study the Book of Psalms is a source of great joy in my life. Every time our study is focused on some portion of the Psalms I am provided with an chance to find new and wonderful gems for my treasury of praises to my God. The gem for today was in finding the Jewish term for the Book of Psalms, Sepher Tehillim, “Book of Praises”. The Book of Psalms provides many themes and functions: Examples are Hymns, (Ps. 24, 48, 99, 136, 146; Community complaints (Ps 74,83); Individual complaints, (Ps 5, 13, 51); Individual songs of thanksgiving (Ps. 116); Royal psalms (Ps. 20, 45, 72, 101); Torah psalms (Ps. 1, 32, 49, 127); Oracle psalms (Ps 82, 87); Blessing psalms (Ps 128); Taunt songs (Ps. 52); Songs of trust (Ps. 110); (http://www.angelfire.com/sc3/we_dig_montana/Psalms.html); but they all provide opportunities to acknowledge the wonder and greatness of God and to praise His Holy Name. Our Psalm for today, Psalm 13, is listed here as a song of individual complaint and the Psalmist does cry out in the agony of seeming abandonment and defeat. Yet in all of this there is the absolute knowledge that God is a father to whom he can come for help. There is true trust in his unfailing love. Psalm 13 is a wonderful model of prayer and supplication in times of stress and doubt. Psalm 13 acknowledges that we sometimes feel lost despite our understanding that God is ever present. Above all, Psalm 13 is a song of praise to a good and loving God. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love;     my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,     for he has been good to me.- May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

Sometimes we seniors get complacent in our service. We think it's time to retire and let the younger ones take over. Sometimes it's because the younger ones act as though we have nothing left to offer and we start to feel a little sorry for ourselves and just back down. Sometimes it's because we feel we have done our job and it's now time to rest. Sometimes it isn't anything we thought about, we just slide into inaction and wake up one morning to find ourselves without purpose and goals in His service. What a loss for everyone! It's a part of the wonder of the workings of the Holy Spirit that when I began to think of my role in the church as a senior I was led to scripture about the “Prodigal Son”. It's not the son who took off and got himself into deep trouble who comes to mind, it's the son who was faithful and did everything he felt was right in the sight of his father who reminds me of us seniors. When we remember that He has always been with us and that everything He has is ours, we waken to the need to share this knowledge with the sons and daughters who just got here or just got back. It is our job to help them see the workings of His fields and the glory of His protection and love. It is our job to help them as they strive to do all that God would have them to do. We may need to remind ourselves of the constant stream of feasts we have already enjoyed at His table and the many warm moments of comfort in His love. Then we can celebrate and be glad every day that we are able to be in His service.

Father God, please help me to stay “fresh and green” in Your service. Please help me to be about the business of proclaiming Your Name with my last breath. I thank You for every moment that I have basked in the warmth of Your love. Amen. May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!

There are days when praises to God utterly fill my heart. Those are the days when I know that there is nothing more important than taking time to just be filled with the wonder of being a child of God. He has given us so much to enjoy on the earth from the glorious sunsets over the waters to the sounds of a single bird in the distance. We have only to open our hearts, eyes and ears to glory in His creations. During times when we struggle with the inconsistencies of man we can find solace in the honor and righteousness of our unchanging God. He is always there for us. He never forsakes us. How wonderful to have a Father who forgives our foolish weaknesses and welcomes us into His bosom of protection with open arms. How wonderful to have a love that is not dependent on our looks, our actions or even our faithfulness. He loves us. Despite all of our weaknesses, He loves us! I thank You, Lord, for the gift of salvation. I thank You, Lord, for the New Covenant of Jesus Christ which includes me. I thank You, Lord, for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit.

A Daily Dose of Love

Ephesians 4:29-32 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

We begin by monitoring the words that come out of our mouths. We make a commitment to avoid any words that are not good for building up and giving grace to the hearer. We call on the help of the Holy Spirit to help us in our new found commitment to show love every day.

Acknowledging that we can only experience one thought and one emotion at a time, we chose to experience love and kindness and avoid bitterness, wrath and anger. We avoid malicious gossip and slander at all cost. We actively seek opportunities to show love.

Let each of us practice saying at least one thing that builds up another person every day of our lives. If we renew that pledge each morning and do not rest until we fulfill it there will be such a reduction in hostility, judgment, and plain meanness among us.

Can you imagine the love that will flow in the world from this simple change in our approach to each day? Can you imagine how it will transform your life if you make a commitment to first seek to uplift someone.

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

How will your brother witness this love mandated by Jesus Himself? We easily say that someone should just know that we love them, but this is a weak excuse for neglecting our duty to show love. We can show love in the smallest kindnesses. We can take the time to share a contagious smile with a loved one. We can look for opportunities to provide a small assistance to a stranger. We can make the act of showing love an active part of who we are.

We can examine ourselves on a daily basis. Are we irritable with our loved ones and kinder to strangers? Do we feel that those who love us have an obligation to contend with our moods? Can we start our commitment to build up at least one other person before we leave the confines of our home?

A Gift Refused

John 14:16-17

 16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
 17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

I read a very sad article which stated that the Holy Spirit was only for the early church to keep them strong as they struggled in those difficult times without the guidance of the bible. I think this belief is held by many modern Christians who view the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost as something only believed by those of the Pentecostal or Fundamentalist Churches.

As I look at some of the purposes of the Holy Spirit as stated in scripture I know that I would never return this wonderful gift unopened and unappreciated.

But why would we need the Holy Spirit in these modern times?
1 Corinthians 6:11

11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Will we convict ourselves when we stray outside the will of God? Will we deny ourselves the power of the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf and justify us in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ?
John 14:26

 26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Are we willing to give up a Holy Teacher who is willing to assist us when we pray for discernment in the Word and in our daily lives?
Romans 8:24-27

24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Are we so willing to give up an Advocate with a direct line to the Father? How wonderful it is to know that in times of trouble we can call on the Holy Spirit to pray with us and for us when we are so stressed that we don't have the words!
Acts 2:16-17 ESV
But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

Before you give back this freely given gift of the Father, take the time to learn of Him; take the time to invite Him into your heart.

I look in wonder at another Nevada sunrise and am grateful for the joy I feel at the presence of the Lord in His every day gifts.

I am so happy to lift praises to Almighty God. I can just imagine the exquisite joy of heaven when I experience the earthly joy received in giving praise.

Sharing praise with other believers magnifies the experience. It's true that we get these opportunities in church fellowship but chances also come in shared car trips and other informal and sometimes chance meetings.

I give thanks to God for the ability to enjoy His rich gifts on earth. I give thanks to God for opportunities for fellowship and worship. I give thanks to God for all He is in my life today and for the promise of eternal life.

I give thanks.

The Glories of God

I am privileged to live where I can enjoy the majesty of a sunset into the water but right now I am sitting in a desert community providing care for a friend. I was busy missing my closeness to the ocean when my eyes were opened to the splendor of a mountain sunrise!

My God is everywhere! Evidence of His majesty is available if we just open our eyes and accept the many gifts He provides.

At Peace in the Spirit

John 13:1 New International Version (NIV)
 1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

We say “Jesus loves me this I know, 'cause the bible tells me so” and there is so much in the bible to support our absolute assurance that this is true.

Just as He took the time to reassure his friends on that night before He went to the cross, He made sure that we knew that we would never be alone. He left us His peace. He left us a Comforter.

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

We do not need to be afraid because we have the assurance of our Lord that he will never leave us without the comfort and protection of His Spirit.

What a wonder it is to live as a child of the Living God. How magnificent it is to be in the Spirit and to have the Spirit dwell within you.

Clearing Out the Clutter

Luke 16:13 ESV
No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

I once attended a meeting of a group called “Addicted to Christ”. As I got to know the group members I found that, although most had a history of addiction to some substance or of being in an enabling role, there were members who in no way fit the profile.

I asked how they came to be in the group and received this explanation. Anything that is important enough to you that you would let it come between you and your relationship with our Savior has to be an addiction. If not, how would you explain it?

Many times we look in a very narrow way at the person whose life is consumed in the pursuit of financial gain and go, ah ha, I don't do that. I don't place money above my love of God.

This narrow view allows us to avoid looking at the things we do allow to clutter our lives so much that there is no time for worship, no time for praise and only brief moments set aside for thanksgiving.

 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Many glibly say “He is the head of my life” and give God less than ten percent of anything they hold dear.

Is it time for spring cleaning. Is it time to assess the things that occupy our thoughts, our time and our resources. Is it time to look at the clutter in our lives and decide what matters not at all and remove it to the recycle bin?

This spring is a good opportunity to evaluate and assure that nothing comes between us and our relationship with God.

Living Within His Protective Arms

Deuteronomy 10:17-19
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.

How easy it is to live within the protective love our God, our Father. How often in scripture does He invite us into the protection of His love. And He asks so little in return.

5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

We are invited into the loving arms of a Father of boundless capacity to love and protect. There is no where we can go and no situation we can encounter that puts us outside of His sphere of influence.

We need not make this walk with God too complicated to follow. We need only to hold on to His hand and follow his commandments. And the most rewarding thing is the knowledge that He will help us when we submit to His will.

A Matter of Time

Why is it that in this modern society so few of us have time for the best things in life? How interesting it is that the things that matter most are often the things tended to last?

Is there time in your busy life to pray, to offer thanks and praise to a loving God who is there always?

Is there time to appreciate and enjoy family who are with us for such a short time in the scheme of things?

How do we spend the precious time that we are allotted here on earth?

We no longer have to hunt, kill and prepare our meat. A simple trip to the supermarket and we can select the exact cut of meat we want in exactly the size we choose. We even have the means at home to store food in freezers and refrigerators and thus decrease our needs for even this basic trip.

Few of us grow our food, and even those of us who do, do so as a hobby more than as a necessity.

Travel and communications are at incredible speeds. We can see and talk instantly to people all over the world and reach any destination on earth in a matter of days, not months.

So where did our time go?

How important to our eternal life are the things on which we place the most value?

Each morning when we wake up we have been given another opportunity to prioritize our lives. We have another opportunity to spend our time on the things that matter most. We have another opportunity to be more noble in our relationship with God and with our loved ones.

But we also continue to have free will. It's a matter of time and how we chose to spend it.

Glimpses of Heaven

It is a very difficult thing to witness the last days of friends. It is a time of continuing prayer that God will give you exactly the right words and the exact times of silence to be of the most help to your friends.

As I prayed for guidance this morning I was given this title and this scripture of comfort. It is amazing that while I was looking for comfort for my friends God provided comfort to me.

How fortunate I am to know that God loves me and has chosen me as one of His special people. How prepared I feel to stand in His Holy Presence and what comfort this is. My purpose here is to share this joy that I have in the Lord asking nothing more than to let the peace that comes from Christ fill our hearts and minds.

I know that God will give me the right words and the right moments of silence because I have asked. I know that He will allow me to be a source of strength and comfort to my friends and I have stopped being afraid because I know that all is in His hands.

Father, God, I thank You for the opportunity to be in Your service.

Borrowed Blessings

It is a joy when someone asks me to pray for them. I feel that they recognize that I love God and I feel it a privilege to go to him in prayer.
James 5:16

16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

I, first, pray for myself that I can reach toward the life that God intends for me. I pray help with my shortcomings. I pray praise for his eternal grace and mercy. I pray that I may be fit to come before him on behalf of myself and others.

I pray thanks for the gift of the Comforter and gratitude for His intercession in my life and for my spiritual life.

I feel that a request for prayer is an opportunity to bring a person before God asking first that their hearts are touched with a desire to be in His will then that he meet the desires of their hearts. The beautiful prayer by Paul on behalf of the Church at Colossae is a wonderful example of this kind of intercessory prayer:

From the first covenant with Abraham through the New Testament promises of Christ Jesus to the present we are admonished to share our blessings as Children of the Living God. One way that we do this is through intercessory prayer.

Why would we need such a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it if not to share in the bounty of our Lord?

I gladly give my prayers knowing that I am also the recipient of many prayers. I gladly pray for others with the hope that their “Borrowed Blessings” will be the light that leads to or strengthens them in the love of God.

What a powerful reminder to us that we must approach our Heavenly Father basking in the assurance that he delights in our prayers, praise and worship!

Jesus reminds us that we, as mortals, rejoice and delight when we are able to do good things for our children. Reflect back on a time when you spotted just the right gift for a child of your heart. What a warm and wonderful feeling when you saw the smile of delight that your gift brings! Remember also the simple trust that your child has that you will take care of everything!

We approach our Heavenly Father in prayer with the assurance that he hears prayers of faith. We strengthen that faith by being grounded in His Word. A Word that assures us that as Children of the Most High God, He wants us to come to Him for our needs.

Our prayers are not an imposition to God. Our prayers have a welcome invitation from God Himself.

"Innocent" Gossip

Proverbs 17:9Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Children have a rhyme that says “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” and even children know that the rhyme is not true. These words often provide a thin veil to hide deep pain and frustration. The simple truth is that words often hurt in much more lasting ways than sticks and stones.

As technology grows so does our ability to use words in hurtful ways. Now we have “cyber bullying” a way to put hurtful things out for all of the world to see then hide our hands behind cute internet names.
Proverbs 18: 8 The words of a whisperer or talebearer are as dainty morsels; they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

Still, common gossip, careless words said without real intent to hurt, often cause the most pain and we as mature Christians frequently fall right into the murk of gossip.

We are admonished in many scriptures about the dangers of careless words.
Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 1.Haughty eyes, 2. a lying tongue, And 3. hands that shed innocent blood, 4. A heart that devises wicked plans, 5. Feet that run rapidly to evil, 6. A false witness who utters lies, And 7. one who spreads strife among brothers. (emphasis added)
Please note that the use of words is involved in three of these things hated by the Lord: a lying tongue, false witness and spreading strife.

The gossip often defends himself by saying “I was only telling the truth.” The question becomes whose truth and for what purpose. Clearly, if the “truth” spoken serves no purpose except to cause pain for the object of the gossip and generate excitement in the hearer, it is only strife. There are two hated things in this Proverb which involve lying and still the author adds the spreading of strife to the list. The gossip, whether spreading truth or lies is on this list!
Romans 1:28-3028 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Sometimes a difficult thing for us to accept is our responsibility in setting an example for our children. The simple truth is that they most often do what we do, not what we say despite all of our protestations to the contrary. Children of gossips often have great comfort with spreading tales about others.

You might have your child pull up “What the Bible Says About Gossip-Christian Teen-Gossip” (christianteens.about.com/od/whatthebiblesaysabout/f/gossip.htm) and you both take the Gossip Quiz.
If your answers surprise you and you find yourself scoring as a gossip you might appologize to your child and make a commitment right there to change your ways and be the example you want to be!

The Natural Order of Things

12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Sometimes we need reminders to be a little patient with ourselves. One came to me today as a part of my morning devotion routine. I love to read the words of Charles Spurgeon. I often find just the word I need in his “Morning and Evening” series.

This morning was one of those times.

I get very impatient with myself because I still fall so very short of the person I want to be in the Lord. I have so many human frailties and no matter how hard I pray I find myself slipping into old habits too easily.

Oh, how I know how to get angry, especially over hurt feelings; how easily I can personalize even the slightest affront; and that old monster, worry, how easily he can slip in and take root.

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

Contentment, a gift freely given by God, is a gift that is often very hard to hold on to. Then the cycle begins. How ungrateful we feel when we are not duly content in the midst of God's generous blessings. And how this further erodes our ability to be truly content.

A re-read of verse 12 and we see “I have learned”. This contentment was learned!

I, too, can learn to be content. I am already grateful for all that God is and does. I can stop the cycle by acknowledging that I am learning to be all that He would have me to be.

I would like to share here an analogy presented by Charles Spurgeon.
….contentment is not a natural propensity of man. "Ill weeds grow apace." Covetousness, discontent, and murmuring are as natural to man as thorns are to the soil. We need not sow thistles and brambles; they come up naturally enough, because they are indigenous to earth: and so, we need not teach men to complain; they complain fast enough without any education. But the precious things of the earth must be cultivated.

As I learn to be content in all things I will continue to cultivate an appreciation of the goodness of God. I will not let my journey of growth be sidetracked (at least not too long) by discontent at my imperfections.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I am grateful for encouraging, comforting scriptures. I truly rejoice in the Lord; I bend my knee and humble my heart in prayer and petition, I come to God with thanksgiving, especially for His peace which transcends all understanding.

Preparing to Abound

Philippians 4:12 New International Version (NIV)12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

Many Christians hesitate to go to God with big requests because there still lingers a bit of embarrassment at looking greedy and a fear of being the young rich man whose riches stood between him and the possibility of salvation. (Matthew 19:16-30)
Much of my early church education revolved around warnings about the things of the world, money, lust, pride, and the snares that were around every corner.

My memories of the many sermons on Philippians 4:12 were focused on Paul's joy in praising God even in the midst of adversity. I don't remember one sermon on his ability to shine in the middle of plenty. That part was quickly skipped over.

Yet, scripture encourages us to reach for the stars in our relationship with God.

In Matthew 7:7 -11; Matthew 18:19; Matthew 21:22; Luke 11:9-13; 1 John 3:22; Philippians 4:6; James 1:5; 1 John 3:22 and many others we are encouraged to go boldly to the Lord with our requests. I don't believe we would have received so many encouragements to ask if there was inherent danger in the asking.

I have witnessed some incredible answered prayers of others. I have witnessed my own answered prayers, yet I still hesitate to step out boldly and pray for “big things” because of ingrained fear that doesn't even have a name.

I have decided to step out boldly and ask my hearts desires. I have decided to prepare myself to truly be content even if I end up living in plenty. I am prayerfully preparing to live with “the brimming cup of mortal joy”.

Father, God, I pray the guidance of the Holy Spirit as I reach out to expand my territory in all ways that You see fit. I thank You for all that You do. Amen.

Waiting in an Attitude of Praise

2He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
3And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
4Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
One of the blessings I have is the writings of Charles Spurgeon sent to my mailbox every day. The words of this very prolific man who lived 19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892 have a way of warming my heart all these years later.

I can't think of a thing we have in common except our love of Our LORD yet his words reach across gender, nationality, denomination and time.

As I struggle in my personal life trying to make good decisions, I am encouraged by his words “We must mark God's providence leading us; and if providence tarries, tarry till providence comes.

David says “I waited patiently for the LORD", not just I waited as long as I thought it should take. It's the “patiently” part that gets difficult, but it's the “patiently” part that is critical.

As I re-re-read this beautiful Psalm I was lead to do a personal expository of the first 5 verses.

I feel so at peace on this my 72nd birthday because I know with assurance that my Lord has heard my cry. I marvel that I am still here. I marvel that He has given me purpose in my life. I marvel at His gracious provision.

We all have a story but I think the most important part of my story is that He has set me upon a spiritual rock and given me a true purpose in life.

We are taught that when the scripture says “fear” we are to interpret as “reverence” and my reverence for God has truly put a song in my heart and a dance in my step. I am so full of joy with every opportunity to sing praises to God.

The Lord, God, is truly my trust and the truth of His word provides guidance and comfort. How fortunate I feel that I have found His way.

My blessings are truly more than can be numbered. My blessings are truly unearned grace and mercy.

Splendor in Earthly Bodies

1 Corinthians 15:40

40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.

One of our members who is most often called upon for Corporate Prayer takes the time to thank and praise God for the daily functioning of our earthly bodies. She recognizes that it is a gift from God that all of the parts are adapted to work together to form a symphony of perfection,. Even when one member is compromised or missing, the body adapts and other members take up the slack. There truly is splendor in our earthly bodies.

So, what then are we to do with this wonderful gift that we have been given?

Living Sacrifices to God
12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

It is easy to forget that we are each different and that these differences are within the perfect plan of God. It is also easy to forget that we are all part of one glorious whole with every member serving a special purpose.

There are some basic structures and functioning that are common for every part of the physical body. Every part is made up of cells with blood flow and exchange of gases and nutrients, ahh but then comes the wonderful differences in the way each part utilizes what has been given!

We. the Body of Christ, have some basic structures and functioning which identify us to the Father as His Children, to each other as brothers and sisters, and to the world as set apart. Then comes the glorious differences.

Presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice means a willingness to make ourselves available to the will of God. It means taking the uniqueness of the way OUR parts are sewn together and using ourselves for His glory. This is our reasonable service.

The splendor of our heavenly bodies is our ultimate goal but we cheat ourselves of half of the promise when we do not celebrate the splendor that is given to us right here and right now.

Father God, I thank You for the time in my earthly body and ask that the Holy Spirit keeps me prepared to perform my reasonable service in Your name. I pray your blessing on all that I do and thank You for every opportunity presented to minister for You. Amen

I pray that each of you will find your personal reasonable service and experience the joy and splendor of your earthly body as you prepare for the everlasting splendor that is to come.

Joy in Sharing God's Blessings

I was once coming home from an out of town conference and stopped for gas, grateful that I made it to the pump with a tank that read past empty. I filled up and grabbed my purse and found no wallet!!!
I envisioned being taken for a deadbeat and being embarrassed beyond belief. I envisioned having to explain this to the police. I started scrambling in my mind to guess who was home that I could call who would be able to come to another town to rescue me.

I imagine that the look on my face must have been stricken because the woman at the next pump walked over and asked if I was O.K.

I simply said “I can't find my wallet” and she walked away.

I went inside trying to figure out what to say to the cashier and was told that my gas was paid for. Disbelief was all I felt as I continued to try and explain how I was going to get money to the station. The attendant smiled and said “ma'am your gas is paid”.

Then I knew and I ran outside to try and thank that woman and she was gone.

Yesterday I was so excited!!! I prayed and my prayer was answered within hours!!! I was so happy to call a friend and share my blessing.

I had prayed that I be given some small opportunity to minister for Christ and received not one opportunity but two.

Anyone who has experienced the joy of seeing someone make a commitment to Christ understands that the reward of service is in the service itself. Anyone who has seen the relief on the face of someone who was in a desperate spot and had the means and the heart to help and did so understands that the joy is in knowing that you had a chance to serve.

Yesterday I fully understood that the woman at the gas station didn't need my thank-you. Yesterday I understood the warm hug from Christ Himself when I have done just what He asks.

This may be hard to hold onto for a while but just try it. Just go out and do some service for someone who has no way to pay you back. Try not to hang around too long accepting thank-you's. Just do whatever God puts on your heart and walk away!

Opportunities

38But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

Occasionally our Pastor will ask that we focus on a particular writer or area of the Bible for a week. This past week we were assigned to read all of the Psalms of Asaph and as much as we could find on his life.
One of the outstanding things about the Psalms of Asaph was his cry out to God for deliverance of His chosen people after a time when they had strayed far from him. This led to a search of articles by folks who identified themselves as “Cultural Jews”, those Jews who no longer identify spiritually or believe in God. As I read their comments and their chosen place in this modern world it was easier to understand the spiritual detours of Asaph's time.

Nothing has changed. We have our modern miracles of deliverance;Deliverances that are a part of near history and really no less spectacular than the parting of the Red Sea, so it is easy to see a parallel with biblical history.

The Bible offers opportunities to live a better life today. We have so many examples that we can draw on as guides and reminders. I remembered the patience of God with the Israelites, past and present and His patience with me personally during the times in my life when I was a Christian in name only. Like many whose stories I read this morning, I participated in some Christian “rituals”, enjoyed the feasts and celebrations and, if anyone asked, I identified myself as “Christian”, but my belief in God was shaky at best.

I think the greatest lesson for me so far in my study of Asaph is a growing sense of humility and gratitude to God for His continued mercy. I have increased humility because I identify with the children of Israel who seemed too stupid to get it despite all that God did for them when I think of the stupidity of someone reared in the church and taught about God from an early age who got sophisticated worldly and stupid enough to doubt His reality.

I have a great sense of gratitude to God as I witness His mercy and compassion on a personal level. I freely share that it is God's unbelievable grace that I was given so many opportunities to hear and believe.
11But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
12So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. Psalm 81
I pray that all who read this will search their hearts and take advantage of His compassion and mercy.

What's in a Name?

"I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to Prison both men and women, as the high priest and the whole council of elders bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brethren, and I journeyed to Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished ... And when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I also was standing by and approving, and keeping the garments of those who killed him.'" Acts 22:4-5,20 RSV
I met a young man named Stephen this morning. He was in my home to provide a service, but there was something about this young man that transcended his chosen profession. Some people just bring a light with them when they enter your space; something about them that touches your spirit even though you can't quite put your finger on it. Stephen is such a man.

I found an opportunity to ask him the history of his name in his family. The reason he got the name had nothing to do with biblical origins but listening closely I heard that someone at some time understood about the Martyr, Stephen.

He shared that he had been encouraged to treasure the fact that he had the “right spelling of the name”, Stephen, and disclosed his knowledge of the biblical Stephen, the first known Christian martyr.

"Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch " Acts 6:1-5.
In my prayers this morning I asked God to put at least one person in my path to whom I could minister in some small way. Instead He chose to send someone who could minister to me with just his presence.

This young man is going to be a father this year. It is my prayer that his child be bountifully blessed his entire life and that Stephen will be a father “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit."

Starting the Day in Prayer

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

When I first open my eyes in the morning my first conscious thought is “Dear God, thank You for the gift of another day. Please be in every thought, word and deed throughout the day.”

I am so aware of the danger of getting out in the world without the blessed presence of the Comforter. I have spent too much time cleaning up the messes I've made when I rush out and do things with only my own counsel.

Scripture encourages us to pray, not only for ourselves and our own salvation but for all of the Saints. I think on the caution presented on airlines to “put your own oxygen mask on first in case of emergency, then assist those needing help”. It is true with prayer. We must be in His will. We must pray for discernment and guidance so that we can effectively carry out His commandment to take the Word out to others.

16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

I strive every day to be all that God would have me to be. I know without a doubt that I must first seek His will then venture into the world. I know that of myself I will never be righteous, but I am confident that I can be “right living” within the safety of His grace and mercy.

I pray that each of you has the support of a loving ministry wherein you can receive guidance, encouragement and support as you face the daily challenges in the world. I ask God's gracious touch on every eye that sees this work.

On Being Good Ground

Romans 12:16 New International Version (NIV)16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Many years ago I was scrubbing down one of the floors where children played at a community center in which I worked. My partner in this work was a retired physician who worked almost full time as a volunteer in three different community based programs.

While we worked I told her about another volunteer, a retired superintendent, for whom I was trying to find meaningful work at the center.

She asked what he wanted to do and I told her that had been my question. His answer had been “I'm a volunteer, I'm here to do what ever it is that you need.”

Even as a worldly person I was impressed with the genuine humility of these two people and their willingness to serve as needed children who were truly considered by society as “the least of these”.

I thanked God, even then, that he had given me also a willingness to serve; and smiled as we worked together mopping floors.

Today, I look at our Spiritual Leader and role model, Minister Johnson, and acknowledge that much of my admiration for her comes from the fact that she lives this Word she teaches. We almost have to put crazy glue in her seat to stop her from serving at every function.

Whenever her hands find work to do, including mopping, she is quick to go to work. There is a genuineness about her in all of this. There is no attempt to impress in her actions. She just is so willing to work for God.

Our topic this week was “The Sower” and our scripture was Mark 4:3-9

15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.
18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word,
19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
As I reflected on this beautiful Word during the week I wondered how one becomes that “good ground”.

How do we avoid being vulnerable to the wiles of Satan who is always on his job and ready to pollute every good thing?

How do we clear out the stones which quickly rip away our joy and make us stumble away from the Word?

What do we do when the thorns and cares of the world threaten to overwhelm us and take our focus off the things of God?

As I prayerfully reviewed the lesson it became so clear!!!

When the focus is on serving in whatever way we are called, when the focus is on Him and His work and not on our own “stuff”, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, tills and prepares us to receive Him and be fruitful. The Holy Spirit converts us into "Good Ground".
