Train Up a Child

Train up a child
Deuteronomy 18
9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.
10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,
11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.
12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.
13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

A part of our charge is to assure that our children know what is in the will of God. So many things are popular and trendy and it’s easy for our young ones to be led astray.

This is indeed a bountiful land within which the Lord has planted us. Yet, there is much in the land that it would be good for us not to imitate.

Just because folks are not, to my knowledge, “sacrificing his son or daughter in the fire“, does not mean that we should not stand watch.

I rely greatly on the concept of the mustard seed. I try to plant the Word as a part of our daily experience in the hope that I don’t close the ears of the young ones in my charge. Sometimes simply saying “we don’t do that because” and referencing the Word of God plants a seed that sprouts when we are not present to tend the garden. I know this is true when I hear my kids telling others why they should or should not do something with great confidence and authority.

Proverbs 22:6 (New King James Version)
6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Perhaps you have had opportunities to “hear” your parents words coming out of your mouth or gotten annoyed when you find yourself acting just like one of your parents This stuff really works.

Ephesians 6:4 (New American Standard Bible)
4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

When I read these words I am always impressed at the awesome responsibility of bringing up our children while being in control of and taking responsibility for our own stuff.

What an awesome charge.

May God Forever Be a Blessing in Your Life!!!
